چکیده

The asymptotic behavior of dissipative hyperbolic systems is very sensitive to the precise nature of the dissipation. Dry (Coulomb) friction is a limit case that has not been fully analyzed, for instance with respect to the asymptotic time behavior of solutions. Examples of such a problem are given by simple models of granular materials in containers. A numerical approach for generic problems of this type is proposed. The algorithm is based on the Discontinuous Galerkin method; the resulting scheme is briefly analyzed. Numerical results show the asymptotic stress profiles to be distinct but “close” to those predicted by an elementary analysis due to Janssen (1895) that still plays a role in Engineering today.

Frictional Strain Hardening-softening in Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Arching Effect

In the current paper the results of a numerical simulation that were verified by a well instrumented experimental procedure for studying the arching effect over a trapdoor in sand is presented. To simulate this phenomenon with continuum mechanics, the experimental procedure is modeled in ABAQUS code using stress dependent hardening in elastic state and plastic strain dependent frictional harden...

Author's personal copy Theoretical analysis of the dynamic behavior of presliding rolling friction via skeleton technique

Depending on the application, friction in mechanical systems can be a desirable or an undesirable thing. In order to optimally utilize or compensate for the frictional effect in the system, characterization of the frictional behavior is a crucial task. Unfortunately, friction force exhibits strong (hysteretic) nonlinear relationship with sliding velocity, displacement and time, which makes the ...

Residual Error Estimators for Coulomb Friction

This paper is concerned with residual error estimators for finite element approximations of Coulomb frictional contact problems. A recent uniqueness result by Renard in [72] for the continuous problem allows us to perform an a posteriori error analysis. We propose, study and implement numerically two residual error estimators associated with two finite element discretizations. In both cases the...

Dynamic Analysis of Presliding Friction via Skeleton Method

Friction, which evidently appears in any mechanical systems incorporating parts with relative motion, manifests itself as material nonlinearity. Depending on its application, friction can be a desirable thing or a drawback in the system. In order to optimally utilize or compensate for the frictional effect in a system, characterization of the frictional behaviour is very crucial. The classical ...

The electrodynamic 2-body problem and the origin of quantum mechanics

We numerically solve the functional differential equations (FDE’s) of 2-particle electrodynamics, using the full electrodynamic force obtained from the retarded Lienard-Wiechert potentials and the Lorentz force law. In contrast, the usual formulation uses only the Coulomb force (scalar potential), reducing the electrodynamic 2-body problem to a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE’s)....
